About Krishnanagar

Krishnagar is also called Krishnanagar is a city and administrative headquarters of Nadia district in West Bengal. Municipal Corporation that falls under Krishnanagar Municipal Region governs Krishnanagar city. The total covered area of the municipality is around 16 km2. It is divided into 24 wards with 24 councils. Currently it remains to be the centre for all the administration purpose. Some of the contesting parties for the elections are Trinomool Congress, Indian National Congress, BJP. As per the norms, the board of councilors elects a chairman from among its elected members. Post this, the chairman becomes the executive head of the municipality. All elected members work together to manage education, health, tourism, and overall development of the area.

As per the 2011 census, Krishnanagar city had a population of 181,182. The urban agglomeration had a sex ratio of 978 females per 1,000 males with literacy was 88.09 percent.

The township of Krishnanagar is located at 23.4°N 88.5°E and has an average elevation of 14 metres (45 feet). It is located right beside the Jalangi River and the Tropic of Cancer passes through outskirts. The coordinates of Tropic of Cancer: 23°26'5"N 88°28'2"E.

History of Krishnanagar

The town is situated on the southern banks of the Jalangi River and is claimed to be named after Krishna Chandra Ray (1728 – 1782). But there are also other claims related to the naming of the city. It is believed to be named after Lord Krishna worshiped by Raja Krishna Chandra Ray. Previously, the village was called ‘Reui’ and there was a Rajbari built here during the reign of zaminder Krishna Chandra Ray. The township remains a prominent place of tourist attraction though the remnants of the past glory have been eroded and only a dilapidated structure of the exquisite places with carving on its inner walls exists today. Krishnanagar municipality was established in the year 1864 and the municipality was named after Raja Krishnachandra Rai who ruled in this region, though earlier it was called Reuigram.

Rajbari

The Rajbari or the Krishnanagar Palace is one of the popular tourist destinations and large number of people visits here to celebrate different festivals. Some of these include the Jhulan Mela in the months of July and August and Holi or Dol during the month of March/ April.

Ranaghat

Ranaghat is another town located in the Nadia district. The place is known best for its sweet dishes, wide variety of flowers and its handloom industry. Situated close to Krishnanagar and about 74 kilometers towards the north of Kolkata, it is a must visit destination.

There is a Roman Catholic Church located in town that is very popular for its grand architecture. It has scenes of Jesus Christ depicted on the walls. These are painted in canvas as well as many other wooden frescos made by Italian artists.

Kalna

Kalna is also the head quarters and municipality of Kalna subdivision in the district of Bardhaman and is known as Ambika Kalna. Attractions here include the 108 Shiva temples and Rajbari (the palace).

Ghurni

Ghurni is another popular destination for tourists because of the production of clay dolls, which are popularly known as Krishnanagar clay dolls. These had been popularised by the Maharaja Krishnachandra who was very fond of them.

Jalangi River

Jalangi River is basically a stem of the Ganges, flowing in Nadia and Murshidabad districts in West Bengal. The Mathabhanga and Jalangi flow into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly. This point where the Jalanagi meets the Ganges is Hooghly is very popular with the tourists.
